Lost and Forgotten Barks: Extinct Breeds

Just like any other animals, any dog breeds can result to extinction. Extinct breeds are result of willful lack of care and attention. Human interventions dramatically affect numbers of dog breeds that resulted to extinctions. Extinct breeds- no longer in existence and died out leaving no living representatives. How unfortunate that during those times, no one takes the first step in protecting and preserving these extinct breeds. The good news is that people nowadays are now aware and more committed in keeping different dog breeds ended up extinct breeds.

Extinct Breeds- Barking from the Past (Arranged Alphabetically)

* Alaunt- extinct breeds and served the purpose of herding, guarding, hunting for their handlers. Alaunt is a mastiff-type dog and is believed to be the predecessors of molosser dogs of the present. Their traits and looks have great resemblance to Caucasian Ovcharka or the Central Asian Sheperd.
* Alpine Spaniel- Considered as the predecessor of the St.

Bernard and the Clumber spaniel. Reports said that the extinction began in 1830’s.
* Chinese Happa Dog- This extinct breed are shorthaired dog with huge resemblance to Pekinese, Pug and Japanese Spaniel.
* Cordoba Fighting Dog- Predecessors of Dogo argentino
* Dogo Cubano was a mastiff-type breed that was designated to do some guarding and hunting activities. They are remembered to be fearless and highly active breeds.
* English White Terrier- This extinct breed were last seen in the late 1890’s. They have good guarding and herding abilities
* English Staghound
* Fell Hound
* Guatemalan Hairless
* Hawaiian Poi Dog- This extinct breed were designed as food for some of the villagers of Hawaii, which lead to their gradual extinction. Eventually, dog eating became taboo in their place.
* Indian Hairless Dog- This extinct breed were last seen in 1890’s.
* Kangaroo Dog
* Nubian Dog
* Salish Wool Dog- This extinct breed is a Spitz-like type breed bred by early people of Washington State and British Columbia. Their coats are sheered like that of a sheep. Reports said the extinction began in 1858
* Southern Hound
* Tahltan Bear Dog- small-type dog breed bred by early people of British Columbia. They have great hunting abilities. It is believed that the extinction began in late 1960’s.
